Kick-Start Pre-Season Basketball Clinic Info

Hello Parents,

Basketball season is almost upon us and we are excited to offer the youth basketball players of North Attleboro our 3rd annual KickStart Athletics Big Red Basketball Clinic. The 2015 KickStart Athletics Big Red Basketball Clinic will be held on November 3rd, 4th, 10th, & 11th at the MPLEX in Mansfield.  We have been working closely with our fitness instructors and the North Attleboro High School Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball Staff to put together an amazing clinic.  We are proud to share that in our first two years of this clinic we were able to give back $5100 to the NAHS Basketball Boosters programs.  KickStart Athletics will continue to give a generous portion of our profits to NAHS Boosters clubs for each clinic we hold.

The primary goal of our KickStart Clinics is to help each athlete learn and improve their individual and team basketball skills through exposure and reinforcement of proper fundamental skills and techniques. We have developed our clinic structure to allow us to maximize your child's potential with the North Attleboro High School Varsity basketball staff as well as current Big Red basketball players. A focus will also be placed on conditioning, to help prepare all athletes for the beginning of basketball season.

To register for our 2015 basketball clinic you can use the link on this email or visit our website at www.kickstartathletics.com for more information. If you have any questions you can reach us at info@kickstartathletics.com.

What is NAYB?

North Attleboro Youth Basketball

NAYB is an organization that provides the children of North Attleboro the opportunity to improve their basketball skills by competing in the MetroWest Basketball league (www.MetroWestBBall.com). MetroWest is a competitive basketball league for boys and girls in 4th-8th grades. Approximately 50 Massachusetts towns and over 500 teams compete in this league.

Team Placement

Metro West has four divisions (Divisions 1-4) with 1 being the highest level of talent. Teams are placed in a division that will provide the appropriate level of competition.

NAYB holds tryouts in the fall for boys and girls in grades 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. Children must attend at least one tryout, but are strongly encouraged to show up for both dates. The tryouts are a combination of skills & drills and competitive games (i.e. 1:1 and 3:3 games). Arrive at your designated time to allow time to complete the check-in process. You must register on-line as walk-up registration on the day of the tryout will not be accepted. Bring a water bottle, but do not bring a basketball.

The NAYB Board facilitates tryouts using independent evaluators to assess the basketball talent of each child. The tryouts are a closed gym; parents are not allowed in the gym during tryouts. NAYB Board members and the independent evaluators are the only people allowed in the gym during tryouts.

NAYB typically fields a Red & a White team for each grade/gender. The NAYB Board determines the placement of all players. The Red team is placed in a higher division than the White team. In general there are 12 players on the 4th & 5th grade teams, 11 players on the 6th grade teams and 10 players on the 7th & 8th grade teams. The actual number per team is determined solely at the discretion of the NAYB Board. Typically, in each grade level,  more kids try-out than there are spots on teams, so expect there to be cuts based upon tryout results.

Age/Grade Eligibility

NAYB has an age eligibility requirement to go along with the grade requirement. Both Requirements must be met. In order to participate on an NAYB team a player must first meet the grade requirement; that is, the player must be in the grade associated with the team they are playing for. For example a 4th grader plays with the 4th graders not with the 5th graders. Age limits also apply. For the 2015-16 season the following age limits apply by grade:

8th Grade - must be born on or after Sept 1, 2000

7th Grade - must be born on or after Sept 1, 2001

6th Grade - must be born on or after Sept 1, 2002

5th Grade - must be born on or after Sept 1, 2003

4th Grade - must be born on or after Sept 1, 2004

The date Sept 1, is used to be consistent with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Rules and Regulations Governing High School Athletics.

Practices and Games

MetroWest plays games on Sundays from December through March. All teams are eligible for the playoffs that begin in late February and conclude in early March. NAYB teams practice twice a week; generally one on weeknight & one on Saturday. Official practices begin the week after Thanksgiving and continue until the season is completed. All Players are expected to attend all practices and all games. Players who routinely miss practices or games will realize less playing time during games or harsher sanctions if the behavior continues.  Since these teams are assembled according to tryouts and evaluations, if your child accepts a position on a team when offered, the expectation is that NAYB Basketball is your child's number one priority if they are playing on multiple teams or sports during the season. Players participating in NAYB may also participate in the North Attleboro Recreation Department basketball program. These are run independently and there can be conflicts with Saturday practices or games, so please be aware of that possibility.

Tournaments

The NAYB registration covers the entry fee for participation in 2 tournaments. Teams may participate in additional tournaments at their own expense. NAYB hosts a tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend and over February vacation for our teams.

Uniforms and Equipment

Coaches are provided with practice and game basketballs, first aid kits, ice packs and score books for the team’s use. Players are provided a full game uniform and a practice jersey for the season. These game uniforms and practice jerseys are the property of NAYB and must be returned immediately following the final game for the team. Families that do not return the uniforms will be sent an invoice to pay for a new uniform and their child will not be allowed to participate in future NAYB season.

Minimum playing time requirements

MetroWest Regular Season games consist of 4 - 8 minute stop time quarters.

4th grade: 12minutes per game; no less than 4 minutes in any half

5th grade: 12minutes per game; no less than 4 minutes in any half

6th grade: 10minutes per game; no less than 4 minutes in any half

7th grade: 8minutes per game; no less than 3 minutes in any half

8th grade: 6minutes per game; no less than 3 minutes in any half

Clarifications

These playing time minimums apply to all Metro regular season and playoff games. They also apply to any tournaments entered as an NAYB team. A team is considered an NAYB team if NAYB pays for the tournament or if the team is using NAYB uniforms or equipment.

Coaches may NOT play a player less than the minimum amount in one game and make it up to him/her in a future game.

Players who fail to regularly attend practice or are disciplinary problems can - AND SHOULD - be penalized by playing below the minimum amounts above. In such a case, the coach must get PRIOR approval from the board before adjusting playing time. The player should also be informed as to why they are not playing minimum time.

Example of how playing time can and will be adjusted for unexcused missed practices, with the support of the board:

During the metro season and playoffs players are expected to attend regularly scheduled practices and games. If a player has an unexcused absence from a practice (i.e. practice for another sport) their playing time for the game that week will be reduced by 5 minutes and will sit out the first half of that game. If a player has an unexcused absence for a game, the player will not be eligible to play in the following weeks game. If there two such occurrences the player will be suspended from the team.

While players are expected to attend them if at all possible, failure to attend unofficial NAYB practices (ie, if the coach gets extra gym time) is not a sufficient reason for a player to play less than the minimum time.

There are no other playing time requirements; for example, players are not entitled to start any game or play in the 4th quarter.

Commitment

MetroWest plays games on Sundays from December through March.  The season consists of 12 regular season games and all teams are eligible for the playoffs that begin in late February and conclude in early March.  Each team also plays in 2 tournaments that are paid for by NAYB. Teams typically practice twice a week; Official practices begin the week after Thanksgiving and continue until the season is completed.  All Players are expected to attend all practices and all games.  Players who routinely miss practices or games will realize less playing time during games and if the behavior continues, harsher penalties. The NAYB tryout is free. If your child is offered a position on a team, and accepts, the fee for the 2015-16 season is $275

2014 Jamfest Tourney merging with Mansfield Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament
We just wanted to bring everyone up to date on the state of the Alex Blase Jamfest tournament.  The BOD has worked diligently to try and secure enough teams to make the tournament successful.  Unfortunately we are not able to get enough teams to hold the tournament this year.  We just met last night and explored all options regarding the tournament.  We are working through the procedure today of notifying the various parties that we will not be able to hold the tournament.

As far as all the NAYB teams and the other non NAYB teams that have registered for our Jamfest tournament;  We have set up a deal to “merge” with the Mansfield Thanksgiving tournament that is being played at Mass Premier.  All NAYB teams have been entered and registered into the Mansfield tournament.

Recap: Jamfest has been cancelled and all NAYB teams are registered for Mansfield Thanksgiving weekend tournament at MPC.

Dear prospective North Attleboro NAYB Parents and Guardians,

To register online please CLICK HERE

It’s hard to believe it’s time to start thinking about basketball already, but it is!  My name is Jason Feid, and I’m writing to invite your athlete to our 2nd annual KickStart Basketball Training Clinic that will be offered this fall to all members of the NAYB family. The winter basketball season will begin shortly.  From a coaching perspective, I see this as an opportunity to offer the NAYB players a chance to get a head-start on the season both with conditioning and with their basketball skills before the season begins. Along with the North Attleboro High School varsity basketball staff, Head Boys Coach Sean Mulkerrins, and newly appointed Head Girls Coach Derek Herber, we have developed a 5 day training clinic that will focus on overall basketball conditioning and position specific skills.

So whether you end up on an NAYB team following tryouts, or if your playing North Attleboro Recreational basketball, this clinic will help you get ready for your season.

The ultimate goal of our KickStart Training Clinic is to provide each participant with an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We are hopeful that this will be the most exciting and gratifying basketball season you've ever experienced and that you will KickStart your winter season with us on the following dates:  November 2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th, and 11th at The M-Plex in Mansfield, MA  from 6:00-8:00pm.

If you attended last fall's KickStart Basketball Clinic, you will notice a few changes.  We have broken up our sessions over a two week period.  This schedule should allow all NAYB players to still practice with their team during this time frame.  NAYB has scheduled their practice dates around our clinic dates.  Also, we've rented out all four full basketball courts at the M-PLEX on our scheduled nights. This allows us to hold the boys and girl's clinics simultaneously.  So, if you have a son and daughter in the NAYB program, they will attend the clinic at the same time.  Another difference you will notice is our improved registration procedure through ACTIVE NETWORK.  We now offer a secure online registration with a credit card payment option, as well as a payment plan to break up your payments. Sibling discounts will automatically be applied during the registration process. Just make sure you register your children during the same online session.  To register online please CLICK HERE.

If you prefer to register the "old fashioned way" (with a check and paper registration forms), that option is still available on our website - www.kickstartathletics.com

Our mission is to instruct, demonstrate and help develop proper fundamentals and skills taught at the high school level to youth age basketball players, as well as to increase their understanding of the overall game and appreciation for the sport.  Our hope is the instruction the players receive will accelerate their natural athletic ability and enable them to perform to their maximum potential. Our goal is to provide an enjoyable, educational and affordable youth basketball clinic, with personal, professional instruction for all skill levels.

KickStart Training Clinic includes both a fundamental and advanced technique program emphasizing individual instruction. Players will enhance their game by receiving technique and drill instruction on position specific skills. Additional drills will be used to improve speed and agility. The coaching staff will teach both strategy and appreciation for the game, particularly the qualities of sportsmanship.

The clinic will be divided into three activity sessions:
- Session 1 (6:00-6:30) will focus on fitness. Participants will participate in basketball related conditioning stations.

- Session 2 (6:30-7:30) will focus on basketball skills. Participants will also be introduced on Coach Mulkerrin’s and Coach Herber's varsity basketball offensive schemes through individual and team drills.

- Session 3 (7:30-8:00) Athletes will participate in 5 v 5 games. Teams will be created by age, and campers will put their training to the test.

4th Grade Tryout Date Posted
2014 - 4th Grade Metro Tryouts

Save the Date: Friday - 1/24/14

NAYB is holding tryouts for Boys and Girls in the 4th grade for the 2013-14 school year for the 4th grade Tournament teams. NAYB does not allow 'playing up' so please do not sign up any third graders, as they will not be allowed to play.

The tryout is free.

The tryouts are a combination of skills & drills and competitive games (i.e. 1:1 and 3:3 games).

The NAYB Board facilitates tryouts using independent evaluators to assess the basketball talent of each child.  The tryouts are a closed gym; parents are not allowed in the gym during tryouts.  NAYB Board members and the independent evaluators are the only people allowed in the gym during tryouts.

NAYB looks to field a multiple teams for each grade/gender.  The NAYB Board determines the placement of all players.  4th grade tournament teams as they are created with even talent, however for all other grades the Red team is placed in a higher division than the White team. In general there are 12 players on the 4th & 5th grade teams, 11 players on the 6th grade teams and 10 players on the 7th & 8th grade teams.  The actual number per team is determined based on solely on the discretion of the NAYB Board.

Not every player that tries out is guaranteed a spot on a team - cuts have been made in the past and in all likelihood will be a reality again this year.

Once selected, the players will be notified and the teams will be given practice time in order to prepare to play in two tournaments. The primary goal is to get them ready for the following year and the 5th grade tryouts and full Metro West.

All 4th graders interested in trying out must be pre-registered thru the registration link on our website. Registration closes on 1/16/2012 at 5PM. If you are interested in having your child tryout for a spot on one of the teams, please register by clicking the link below and provide the required information. Trying out for a team, does not guarantee a spot for your child on a team. The tryout will consist of a combination of skills & drills and competitive games (i.e.

As part of the registration process, you will be asked to accept the NAYB Code of Conduct. Click to Read the NAYB Code of Conduct

Following the tryouts, players will be notified if they have been placed on a team.  The actual number of kids on each team, as well as the number of teams, is determined solely at the discretion of the NAYB board.

The Commitment
If your child does make a team, you will be required to sign-up and pay a $85 registration fee. Your registration fee will cover the cost for each team to be entered into two tournaments (Typically 3 to 4 games per tournament) and will cover the cost of scheduled practice times. At the discretion of the coach, and with agreement from the parent's of the players on a particular team to bear the additional cost, a team can be entered into additional tournaments or have additional games scheduled.
